One aspect of the present invention is a composition containing an extract of Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium). Such a composition is for preventing the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) to the human body. The extract may be extracted with an extraction medium containing more than 57.5% by volume of alcohol. The extraction medium may contain at least one of a monohydric alcohol and a divalent alcohol as a main component. Such compositions may be microbyside selected from the group consisting of aqueous solutions, gels, sol, creams and suppositories. Such compositions may be for application to the skin or mucous membranes.
