An insecticidal composition is provided, the composition comprising: a) an insecticidally effective amount of one or more compound having the general formula (I), in which: R1 is alkyl, halogen, or CN; R2 is 4,5-dicyanoimidazol 2-yl, haloalkyl, or S(O)mR7; R3 is hydrogen, halogen, NR8R9, S(O)nR10, C(O) R11, alkyl, haloalkyl, OR12, or N=CR13R14; R4 and R6, each independently represent hydrogen, halogen, haloalkyl, CN, or NO2; R5 is hydrogen, halogen, haloalkyl, haloalkoxy, or S(O)pR15; R7, R10, R12 and R15 each independently represent alkyl or haloalkyl; R8 and R9 each independently represent hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, haloalkyl, alkoxycarbonyl, or S(O)qCF3; R11 and R14 each independently represent hydrogen or alkyl; R13 is phenyl optionally substituted by one or more halogen atoms or a member selected from OH, alkyl, alkoxy, and cyano; and m, n, p, and q independently represent 0, 1, or 2; and b) at least one nitrogen-based fertilizer. The nitrogen-based fertilizer reduces the phytotoxic effects of the compound of general formula (I) on the target plants. There is further provided a method of treating plants at a locus comprising applying to the locus a compound of the general formula (I) and a nitrogen-based fertilizer.
