A photothermal agent can be used in both photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and photothermal therapy (PTT) applications. The photothermal agent can include a small molecule, organic compound and/or polymers with absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) interrogation window (700-900 nm). The compound can be a biocompatible organic nanoparticle (ONP). The photothermal agent can be administered to a patient to locate a tumor site in the patient using in vivo imaging techniques. Once the tumor site has been determined, the tumor site can be irradiated with near-infrared light to stop or inhibit the growth of the tumor.La présente invention concerne un agent photothermique qui peut être utilisé à la fois dans des applications d'imagerie photoacoustique (PAI) et de thérapie photothermique (PTT). L'agent photothermique peut comprendre un composé organique à petite molécule et/ou des polymères ayant une absorption dans la fenêtre d'interrogation proche infrarouge (NIR) (700-900 nm). Le composé peut être une nanoparticule organique (ONP) biocompatible. L'agent photothermique peut être administré à un patient pour localiser un site tumoral chez celui-ci à l'aide de techniques d'imagerie in vivo. Une fois que le site tumoral localisé, ce dernier peut être irradié avec une lumière proche infrarouge pour arrêter ou inhiber la croissance de la tumeur.
