PURPOSE: A composition containing herb extract for preventing or treating acne is provided to ensure antibacterial activity to Propionibacterium acnes. CONSTITUTION: A composition for preventing or treating acne contains an extract of 1-70 weight% of Phellodendron amurense Rupr, 1-60 weight% of Houttuynia cordata, 1-60 weight% of Paeonia lactiflora Pall, 1-50 weight% of Agrimonia pilosa Ledeb, and 1-50 weight% of Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch. The extract is isolated using water, C1-C3 alcohol, or a mixture thereof. The extract has antibacterial activity to Propionibacterium acnes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Malassezia furfur.
