PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide methods for treating and preventing otitis externa with a treatment course consisting of only one dosing.SOLUTION: A method of the invention comprises topical administration of a composition to the outer ear canal, where the composition comprises an active agent and a lipid carrier such as liposomes and nonvesicular lipids. A composition of the invention does not include viscosity-enhancing celluloses or adhesive components, and preferably is not a gel form. Preferably, the composition is a pharmaceutical composition comprising an oil-insoluble preservative, which composition will clinically resolve infection and sequelae thereof within 14 days after the administration.
