The invention relates to a method for immobilizing a flying insect by exposing it to intense cold, for handling purposes and in particular for depositing an insecticidal device or tracking equipment on its body. The method of this invention comprises two stages: the first stage consists in enclosing the insect without immobilizing it. The second stage concerns the exposure of the insect to intense cold. To implement the first step of the process, the device comprises two boxes: 1 and 2, and a thread 13 (fig.1). The housing 2 is welded to the thread 13 to form an enclosure coupling. The other end of the housing 2 is connected to the housing 1 (cage housing). Attracted by the light which enters through the grid 3, the insect moves towards the housing 1. By introducing the disc 6 into the slot 5, the insect will be trapped in the housing 1, as in a cage, without being immobilized. The second step of the process of this invention consists in exposing the insect, trapped in the housing 1, to an intense cooling gas until the insect is immobilized. The immobilized insect is extracted from the housing 1 and the manipulations are carried out on it. The method and the device of this invention allow the immobilization of a living insect without subjecting the insect to traumatic mechanical pressure and without exposing the operator to the risks of direct contact and the bite of the insect.
