The intervertebral implant for fusing together adjoining vertebral bodies comprises a pair of dissimilar cages (40,41). One of these cages (40) has a wedge-shaped front end. Preferably the cage (40) with the wedge-shaped front end is longer than the other cage (41). The two cages (40, 41) are designed that a first cage can be placed in an unilateral approach first more to the anterior of the interdisc space (24) and the second cage more towards the anterior ring apophysis of the vertebral body (Fig 14a, 14b).
