PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for screening a substance suppressing a new process causing skin pigmentation and a skin pigmentation inhibitor obtained by the method.SOLUTION: The method for screening a substance suppressing skin pigmentation includes the steps of: (a) treating epidermal keratinocytes under the presence or absence of a target substance and bringing the epidermal keratinocytes into contact with a liver cell growth factor before, at the same time with or after the treatment (b) comparing fine particle uptake activity of the epidermal keratinocytes treated under the presence of the target substance with fine particle uptake activity of the epidermal keratinocytes treated under the absence of the target substance and (c) selecting a target substance which degrades the fine particle uptake activity of the epidermal keratinocytes.
