A method of magnetic resonance imaging a target tissue in a subject includes a step of administering a first Eu2+-containing complex to the subject. The first Eu2+-containing complex has a reduction potential that is more negative than a reduction potential for a selected compound present in the target tissue. A first set of images of the target tissue in the subject is then taken by T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging.
