The invention relates to a drive device in a reverse vending machine to forcibly drive at least one handling unit therein suited to handle empty packaging in the form of empty beverage containers. The handling unit is free of any electrical wiring or electrical components, is configured to be fully cleanable through use of water or other cleaning agent, and has a mechanical drive which is connected, via a mechanically separable power transfer coupling, to a separate electrically powered drive installed on a wall, a framework or part of a cabinet of the return vending machine. Further, the handling unit is locatable in a releasable manner inside the cabinet.
