Potential dispersants are prepared by hydrogenation of alkyl ketene dimers, alkenyl ketene dimers, or ketene dimers. The addition of the potential dispersant to paper or paperboard increases its water and moisture resistance while maintaining reproducibility and repulping potential. Also provided is a method of increasing the repulping potential of wax coated paper or paperboard.
