Fluorescent pH detector and methods for measuring pH using the fluorescent phdetector. A method and a system for measuring a sample property such as pH or carbondioxide concentration using a probe for delivering excitation light and receivingemission light at at least two wavelengths from a fluorescent species immobilisedon a substrate. The probe is physically isolated for example by a window from thefluorescent species on the substrate. The light received at the first and secondwavelengths is used to determine the sample property. In addition a tip can beprovided over the substrate in such a way as to permit the analyte to contact thesubstrate for example via a semi permeable membrane.
