The biocompatible lattice structures and methods of design disclosed hereinhave an increased or optimized lucency,even when constructed from a metallic material. The methods allow for thedesign of a metallic material with sufficient strength foruse in an implant and that remains radiolucent for x-ray imaging. The presentinvention also includes markers for use in implants thathave a variable lucency or radiolucency. The use of a variably lucent markercan provide a quick indication of the implant's alignmentduring implantation or during post-operation imaging. The variably lucentmarkers can be used in any implant that has some level oflucency when viewed through an imaging device.
