By using the computer processor 44, one or more spectral components in the received light are detected, indicating the light absorption by the components of the red blood cells, by analyzing the received light. In response to detection, the computer processor determines whether there is blood present in the body effluent. The computer processor at least partially generates an output on the output device 32 in response to the determination.
