A transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) device may be provided with one or more coils. The coils are pulsed for periods of less than two milliseconds and comprise a plurality of conductors 501 that are electrically insulated and connected to each other and are located within a core 502, 503. A viscoelastic layer and an elastic layer, which may be a polymer, glass, ceramic or synthetic material 505 may surround the core. The layers are located within a housing 506. Further embodiments containing additional layers are shown in figures 6 and 7. The device seeks to reduce noise produced during operation of the device, usually a clicking sound, which may damage the patients hearing. This may be partially achieved by increasing the frequency of a substantial portion of the spectrum of the pulse, preferably to above the human hearing range. The invention uses quiet coil technology to reduce the conversion of electrical energy into acoustic oscillations.
