Methods and compositions for modulating the plant defense response are provided. Nucleotide and amino acid sequences for maize peroxidases are provided. These sequences can be used in expression cassettes for modulating plant defense response, increasing plant disease resistance and increasing plant stalk strenght. These sequences can also be used in methods of selecting or breeding for plants with increased disease resistance. Transformed plants, plant cells, tissues, and seed are also provided.
