Apnea of prematurity (AOP), which is the most common and frequently recurring problem for preterm infants, is a major concern for caregivers in intensive care nurseries. Study of possible interventions for management of AOP in preterm infants is an urgent research issue. Because of their immature organs, preterm infants are too fragile to cope with excessive environmental stimulation. Although many devices use various stimulations to interrupt AOP, these same stimulations may also induce stress responses in preterm infants.In response to this dilemma, we have developed a device which uses automated non-invasive stimulations to interrupt AOP. This device includes a cardio-respiratory monitor, a computer, a flushing bag and a mother voice player.
