A fluid reservoir 201 of variable volume is connected by a lumen 16 to the inflatable faecal retention balloon 14 of a rectal catheter A so that the system is closed. Fluid can be pumped from the reservoir which is spring loaded to the balloon via the lumen. When a suitable balloon pressure is indicated on the pressure indicator 206 the valve 204 is manually closed to maintain the pressure in the balloon.
