A device 2 for sampling gastro-intestinal material comprising a capsule body 4 with a dissolvable element 10 which dissolves in a predetermined region of the gastro-intestinal tract to actuate a suction mechanism to draw sample material through input valve 6. The device may be swallowed orally. The suction mechanism may comprise a biasing member such as spring 12 which is released when element 10 is dissolved, expanding sample chamber 14 to generate a partial vacuum and establish a pressure gradient. There may be channels and indents to prevent blockage of the inlet. The valve 6 may close in the absence of a pressure gradient. A sealing material such as an enteric coating may seal the actuator opening 26 until the capsule has reached the predetermined region of the intestinal tract. The device may be coated with a muco-adhesive to adhere the device to a lining of an intestinal wall in the correct orientation for material to be drawn in through the inlet.
