A flow tube apparatus provided to determine the pulmonary functional residual capacity (FRC), the apparatus comprising: a) a flow tube (102) having a defined length between a distal end (102d) and a proximal end (102p) , which has a substantially open lumen (102L) configured to allow air to flow from said proximal end (102p) to said distal end (102d); said flow tube having a defined wall between an inner diameter (102i) and an outer diameter (102o); b) a first recess disposed within said wall provided to receive a flow meter (104) and a second recess disposed within said wall provided to receive a pressure sensor (106); c) said flow tube being configured to be associated with a flow deflector apparatus (110) comprising: i) an axis (114) disposed across the diameter of said lumen (102L) at a distance (114d) from said end ( 102p) proximal, said axis (114) having a first end (114a) within said wall (102w) of the flow tube and a second end (114b) extending through and passing said wall (102w) of the flow tube , wherein said second end (114b) is adapted to be associated with a baffle actuator (108) disposed externally to said flow tube; ii) wherein said deflector actuator (112) is adapted to drive said shaft (114) within said lumen (102L) of the flow tube in at least one direction; iii) said axis (114) being associated with a deflection sheet element (116) provided to divert the air flow into said flow tube (102), characterized in that said sheet (116) is configured not to occlude the flow of air through said flow tube (102) and in which it flows through said tube to maintain normal respiratory physiology along said flow tube (102); and wherein said deflection sheet element (116) can be controlledly manipulated around said axis (114) to assume at least two non-occlusive positions within said flow tube (102), a first position of the sheet provided to keep said lumen of the flow tube substantially open and a second leaf position provided to divert the flow of air through s
