The present invention relates to an extract of Smilax china roots having estrogen-like effects, and more specifically, to a composition for preventing, treating, or alleviating diseases associated with estrogen deficiency； to a composition for enlarging breasts； and to a composition for preventing, treating, or alleviating hair loss, or for promoting hair growth, all of which comprise an extract of Smilax china roots as an effective component. By binding to estrogen receptors and in the same manner as estrogen, the compositions of the present invention can activate a signal transduction mechanism induced from binding of estrogen and estrogen receptors, and can promote proliferation of mammary cells in which the estrogen receptors are expressed.
