A system (2) for individually checking animals (8) which may each be provided with an identification label. The system (2) is provided with at least a read-out device (4) for generating an electromagnetic interrogation field (6) and registering a response signal generated by an identification label when the label is in the interrogation field. The system (2) is provided with an automatic feeder (24,10) for feeding an animal (8) and a control system (16) which is communicatively coupled (18,20) with the read-out device (4) and the automatic feeder (24,10). The control system (16) is so configured that it controls the automatic feeder (24,10) for dispensing feed when an identification label has been detected by the read-out device (4). The system (2) is provided with detection means (14) for detecting a presence of the animal (8). The control system (16) is communicatively coupled (22) with the detection means (14) and is so configured that it controls the automatic feeder (24,10) for dispensing feed when the animal (8) has been detected by the detection means (14) and no identification label has been detected by the read-out device (4).
