A system and method for removing a natural lens and inserting an intraocular lens (IOL) in an eye lens capsule is provided. In particular, this is accomplished by inserting the IOL through the opening in the rear capsule created using the focused laser beam. The system includes a laser unit, a detector for generating an image of the interior of the eye, and a computer for controlling the cooperative function of the detector and the laser unit. Based on the image of the posterior capsule provided by the detector, a computer is used to control the movement of the focus through the tissue of the posterior capsule to perform a laser induced optical disruption (LIOB) on the posterior capsule tissue.
