A camera for medical dental purposes has a housing (10) incorporating white LEDs (64) and ultraviolet LEDs (55) arranged around a window (16) in front of a colour filter (16). The filter absorbs light produced by the ultraviolet LEDs. Light passing through the filter reaches an image converter (8). Background images are removed by a signal evaluation circuit (74, 76) and the resulting image is presented on a screen (80).
