The use of red or near infrared light upon neurons of the lumbar plexus that are in distress due to retraction-induced ischemia. The surgeon may protect nerves made ischemic in the surgery by: a) making an incision in a patient, b) inserting an access device into the patient through the incision to at least partially create a path to a spine of the patient, and c) irradiating nervous tissue adjacent the path with an amount of NIR or red light effective to provide neuroprotection.La présente invention concerne l'utilisation de lumière rouge ou dans le proche infrarouge (NIR) sur des neurones du plexus lombaire souffrant de dommages provoqués par une ischémie induite par une rétraction. Le chirurgien peut protéger les nerfs rendus ischémiques par la chirurgie comme suit : a) réaliser une incision chez un patient, b) insérer à travers l'incision un dispositif d'accès à l'intérieur du patient pour créer un accès au moins partiel à une épine du patient, et (c) irradier les tissus nerveux à proximité de l'accès avec une quantité de lumière NIR ou rouge suffisante pour produire une neuroprotection efficace.
