1. A method of preparing an antibody preparation with a reduced level of host cell proteins (HCP) from a mixture containing an antibody and at least one HCP, the method comprising: (a) applying the mixture to a first ion exchange resin in a balance buffer, where more than 30 grams of antibody is applied per liter of resin; (b) washing the HCP from the resin using multiple washing steps; and (c) eluting the antibody from the resin with an elution buffer to obtain a first eluate, so that an antibody preparation with a reduced level of HCP is obtained. The method of claim 1, wherein the application and washing is carried out at a pH of about 5, and where approximately 35-70 grams of antibody per liter of resin is applied. The method of claim 1, wherein the application and washing is carried out at a pH of about 5 and where about 70 grams of antibody per liter of resin is applied. The method of claim 1, wherein the mixture comprising the antibody and at least one HCP is not bound to protein A before applying the mixture to the first ion exchange resin. The method of claim 1, wherein the plurality of washing steps include at least a first washing and a second washing, wherein there is an increase in electrical conductivity from the first washing to the second washing. The method according to claim 5, wherein the first washing is carried out using a equilibration buffer and the second washing is carried out using a mixture of an elution buffer and water. The method according to claim 6, wherein the mixture of elution buffer and water contains about 40-50% elution buffer and about 50-60% water. The method according to claim 7, wherein the mixture of elution buffer and water contains about 45% elution buffer and about 55% water. The method of claim 8, wherein the elution buffer contains 20 mM sodium phosphate and 150 mM sodium chloride. The method according to claim 1,1.
