The invention relates to a device (10) and to a method for cutting-to-lengthsurgicalsuture material (12). The device (10) possesses a thread spool (20) having acontinuous thread of the surgical suture material (12), a thread advancinggripper(22) for drawing off a defined length of surgical suture material (12), and acuttingunit (50) for cutting the surgical suture material (12). According to theinvention, adeflection installation by way of which the surgical suture material (12) isplaceableso as to be angled to the primary transport direction in at least one openloop (40) ispresent. The length of the open loop (40) herein can be variably adjusted. Thecuttingunit (50) herein is positioned between the thread spool (20) and thedeflectioninstallation (30, 30.3).
