Discloses microcapsules comprising a capsule shell encapsulating a suspension of liver cells or liver cell derivatives in physical contact to with an amount of erythropoietin capable of stimulating the liver cells. The size of the microcapsules is 100 700 mum. The amount of erythropoietin is in the range 10-7 to 10-2 U/ml of the cell suspension. Further disclosed are methods for production of the microcapsules. Further disclosed is the use of the microcapsules in the manufacture of a medicament for treatment of liver disease. The therapeutic application of the microcapsules is related to the provision of physiologically active cells for liver therapy or liver cell transplant technology.
