A surgical system, comprising a surgical instrument configured to wirelessly transmit identifying data specific to the surgical instrument, and a console configured to establish a wireless two-way communication link with the surgical instrument, to receive the identifying data from the surgical instrument, to register the surgical instrument based on the identifying data, to receive at least one of operational data or commands from the surgical instrument, and to provide operational feedback data to a user of the surgical instrument during an operation of the surgical instrument based on the at least one of operational data or commands, wherein the surgical instrument periodically monitors the state of the two-way communication link with the console.
