The self contained system (1) has a retractable tray (3) on which is mounted a loop of tubing (6) through which human blood is circulated from a bag (13) by a pump (10) within the housing. When the tray is fully inserted the tubing is directly beneath a number of ultra violet light emitting tubes. The blood is circulated for a specific exposure time and the temperature monitored .
