The present invention describes a method for constructing structured nucleic acid molecules aiming to increase stability and efficiency thereof in supressing the expression of target genes in various organisms. The nucleic acid molecules according to the invention comprise a first region having at least 19 contiguous nucleotides, a second region complementary to the first, and a third region encoding a ribozyme. Stability of the nucleic acid molecule can also be increased by including incompatibility lock regions, which allow the ends of the molecule to bind. The invention also provides plants incorporating the taught sequences, demonstrating effectiveness thereof in controlling various agricultural pest species and illustrating one of the various possibilities of use.
