The invention disclosed herein is a method and system for performing medical procedures utilizing direct percutaneous access to the aorta. The main sheath is introduced through an incision formed at a location close to the sternum, and the main sheath is disposed along the posterior portion of the sternum (preferably relative to the posterior portion of the sternum). The instrument that has passed through the main sheath is used to form a purse string suture on the outer wall of the aorta. An opening is formed in the wall of the aorta in the region surrounded by the purse string suture, and the distal end of the introduction sheath advances through the opening to the aorta. A medical procedure, which is the transcatheter implantation of the aortic valve, is performed using an instrument that passes through the introducer sheath to the aorta. After the medical procedure, the introducer sheath is removed from the aorta and the purse string suture is tightened to close the opening when the introducer sheath is removed from the aorta.
