PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a three-dimensional X-ray imaging system, particularly a 3D dental intraoral imaging (3DIO) system for collecting a series of 2D image projections. An X-ray imaging system includes a housing, an X-ray source attached to an occlusal or motion gantry configured to move a radiation source within the housing to a plurality of positions, and an imaged from the X-ray source. An X-ray detector array located opposite the object to be scanned, wherein the detector array is used to capture a 2D image of the object when the X-ray source is located at multiple imaging locations. An X-ray detector array synchronized with the source and a processor configured to accept the 2D image and reconstruct the 3D image. Multiple imaging locations can be located on a plane substantially parallel to the x-ray detector array.
