There is provided a method of treating a patient having a disease or condition associated with IVD degeneration. The methods include administering cells obtained from human umbilical cord tissue, or containing pharmaceutical compositions prepared from such cells and hydrogels. In some embodiments, administration of the present cells promotes recovery and regeneration of degenerated IVD tissue in the patient.
