The present invention refers to a non-pharmaceutical composition, especially a dietary supplement, comprising butyric acid and/or phenylacetic acid and/or its precursor 4-phenylbutyric acid or any salt thereof. The butyric acid, phenylacetic acid or the 4-phenylbutyric acid can be present within the dietary supplement as an inorganic or an organic salt, as a polymorph, hydrate or solvate thereof. The invention is further related to the use of said dietary supplement to improve or maintain health, especially for preventing cancer, and to a dietary regimen for said supplement.
