The present invention relates generally to microparticles, and more particularly to systems and methods for encapsulation within microparticles. In one aspect, the invention generally relates to a microparticle that contains a component therein, the component containing an agent that can be released from the microparticle, for example, by diffusion. In some cases, the agent may be released from the microparticles without destroying the microparticles. The component may be, for example, polymer particles, hydrogel particles, fluid droplets, and the like. The component may be contained within the fluid, i.e. encapsulated within the microparticles. The agent may be released from the component into the fluid and then from the fluid via the microparticles. In such a manner, the release of the active substance from the microparticles may be controlled, for example on a relatively long time scale.
