In some instances, a method for preparing one or more bones includes inserting a spacer within a space defined between the first and second bones, such as a joint space between the first metatarsal and the inner wedge-shaped bone. The bone preparation guide can be aligned with the opposing ends of the first and second bones using spacers as alignment criteria.
