El dispositivo permite determinar la agudeza visual del individuo y, mediante el cambio de colores, que implica modificaciones del contraste en el optotipo, sirve también para detectar alteraciones de la visión, como problemas patológicos y/o defectos genéticos, relacionadas con el color.
