A system for milking a group of milking animals (8), in particular cows, wherein the system comprises an accomodation space (2) for keeping milking animals (8). The accomodation space is configured such that the milking animals can walk around freely in the accommodation space. Several milking stations (10) are each placed at a fixed location and next to each other. The milking stations each comprise an entry opening (11) for entry of a milking animal from the accommodation space to the milking station. The entry openings of the milking stations are each open permanently. An automatic milking system (20) is provided for automatic milking of milking animals present in the milking station. The milking stations comprise a drinking system (16) which is configured to provide water for the milking animais. The drinking system of the milking stations is the only drinking facility for the milking milking animals can meet their daily water needs. The accommodation space is configured such that he aninals in the accomodation space can walk freely from the accommodation space to each entry.
