The present invention relates to a composition for treating and improving a liver disease including as an active ingredient an extract of houttuynia cordata thunb or quercitrin isolated therefrom which is a polyphenol compound. The composition of the present invention has an enhanced antioxidant activity and can be useful for treating and improving a liver disease by effectively suppressing an expression of sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), which is a transcription factor of genes and protein participated in neutral fat synthesis in a liver tissue.
