The present disclosure provides an improved method of determining a water out condition of a humidified gas supply device. The method includes a two-step process that includes a primary determination of a low water condition and a secondary determination of a low water condition. This primary determination is made while normal operation of the device is permitted. During secondary determination, the method provides temporary control of the humidified portion of the device.
