PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable displaying an easily viewable image in a removal work when the light source of an endoscope system is turned off.SOLUTION: An endoscope system includes: an electronic endoscope where an illumination window through which illumination light is radiated to a subject is arranged at the distal end part and a color solid state imaging element for receiving the light from the subject is mounted on the distal end part a light source device having multiple semiconductor light emitting elements to generate white light and narrow-band light as the illumination light an image processing unit for generating a display image signal on the basis of a captured image signal from the color solid state imaging element and a monitor for displaying the image based on the display image signal. When failure occurs in all the semiconductor light emitting elements to perform light emission in a normal observation mode among the multiple semiconductor light emitting elements, the light source device allows the semiconductor light emitting elements to generate the narrow-band light to be emitted in a special light observation mode to perform light emission, and the image processing unit generates a monochromatic display image signal on the basis of the captured image signal.【課題】内視鏡システムの光源が消灯したときの抜去作業時に、見易い画像を表示させることを可能とする。【解決手段】先端部に被写体に対して照明光を照射する照明窓が設けられ、被写体からの光を受光するカラー固体撮像素子を先端部に搭載した電子内視鏡と、照明光としての白色光と狭帯域光を生成するための複数の半導体発光素子を有する光源装置と、カラー固体撮像素子からの撮像画像信号に基づいて、表示画像信号を生成する画像処理部と、表示画像信号に基づく画像を表示するモニタと、を備えた内視鏡システムであって、複数の半導体発光素子のうちの前記通常観察モード時に発光させる半導体発光素子の全てが故障した場合、光源装置は、特殊光観察モード時に発光させる狭帯域光を生成するための半導体発光素子を発光させ、画像処理部は、撮像画像信号に基づいて、モノクロの表示画像信号を生成する。【選択図】図11
