A surgical instrument comprising an elongate channel configured to operably support a surgical staple cartridge therein. In at least one form, the anvil is pivotally coupled to the proximal end of the elongated channel such that the anvil pivots about a separate non-movable anvil axis defined by the elongated channel. The firing member is configured to move axially within the elongated channel as a firing motion is applied. The firing member is configured to movably engage the anvil and the elongate channel and to space the anvil at a desired spacing relative to the elongate channel when driving the firing member axially through the elongate channel.
