A novel inorganic antibiotic, phosphopyricin, has antibiotic activity againsttheGram-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) andvancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VRE). We show that this potentantibiotic isbactericidal, and exhibits low toxicity in an acute dose assay in mice. As asyntheticcompound that does not occur naturally, phosphopyricin would be evolutionarilyforeign to microbes, thereby slowing the evolution of resistance. In addition,itdegrades in light, and will break down in the general environment where strongselective pressures imposed by antibiotic residuals are known to accelerateantibioticresistance. Phosphopyricin represents an innovation in antimicrobials, havingasynthetic core, and a photosensitive chemical architecture that would reduceaccumulation in the environment.
