The cutting device has a cutting unit (200), a feed unit (400), by which a sugarcane (ZR) is fed in the longitudinal direction of the cutting unit and a node sensor unit (300) upstream the cutting unit, which detects node areas (KB) available in the sugarcane. A control unit (500) is provided which interacts with the feed unit (400), the node sensor unit and the cutting unit. The control unit activates the cutting unit, when a node area of the sugarcane is found in the cutting unit. A scion containing a node area is sectioned from the sugarcane.
