An intraocular lens is disclosed, which includes a diffractive element with arelatively low add power. The addpower may be less than about 2 Diopters, may be less than about 1 Diopter, ormay be in the ranges of 0.5 to 2.5 Diopters, or 1.0lo 2.0 Diopters, or 1.5 to 2.0 Diopters, or 1.0 to 1.5 Diopters. The low-add-power diffractive element increases the depth of thefocus of the intraocular lens, for example, compared to a similarly shapedintraocular lens without the diffractive element. In oneembodiment, the depth of focus is defined in terms of a threshold MTF value ata particular spaim1 frequency. The threshold maybe an absolute threshold, such as 0.10, 0.15, 0.17, 0.20, 0.25 or 0.30, or maybe a relative threshold, such as a particular percentageof the peak value. The spatial frequency may be 25 line pairs per mm. 50 linepairs per mm. 100 line pairs per mm, or any suitablevalue.
