The invention provides a partially or totally coated substrate, the coating comprising a water-absorbing hydrophilic random polymeric network comprising hydrophilic cross- linked polymeric chains which are directly bound to the surface of the substrate, said polymeric chains comprising one or more hydrophilic monomer(s). The invention also provides a process for obtaining the coated substrate of the invention.
