The dual-energy apparatus includes: a first scintillator pixel detector array 120 proximal to an X-ray source, for source photons of relatively low energy, a second scintillator pixel detector array 170 distal from the source, for source photons of relatively high energy, each including windows 140, 180 and photosensitive devices 150, 1110. Each of the second pixel detectors has the same pixel area as a plurality of the first pixel detectors, for example 2 x 4. The approximate energy distinction is at 2MeV.
