PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrasonic surgical instrument with suppressed generation of cavitation, the ultrasonic surgical instrument being used in a sonodynamic therapy which utilizes such a theory that irradiation of cells incorporating a photosensitizer with ultrasonic vibration is effective against annihilating the cells.
SOLUTION: The ultrasonic surgical instrument is provided with a drive circuit and a hand piece to be vibrated at a frequency and an amplitude corresponding to an AC current output by the drive circuit, wherein the drive circuit is provided with a cavitation suppression circuit comprising an AC/DC conversion means for inputting the output end voltage of the drive circuit and converting it to a DC voltage, a comparison means for comparing the DC voltage by the AC/DC conversion means with a predetermined threshold, and a voltage control means for lowering the voltage value of the AC current when the result of the comparison by the comparison means indicates that the DC voltage by the AC/DC conversion means exceeds the threshold.
