The present invention relates to a composition useful for preventing or treating irritable bowel syndrome, and to a method for treating or preventing irritable bowel syndrome. The present invention uses an rhizome extract, preferably an rhizome extract using an aqueous ethanol solution, and more preferably an rhizome extract using an aqueous ethanol solution of 35 to 65 v/v%, as an active ingredient to treat or prevent irritable bowel syndrome. The extract exhibits superior effects of inhibiting bowel irritation and enhancement for dyschezia caused by stresses or irritable bowel.
